Jade, Reese Witherspoon and Aimee Lou Wood honoured at Women of the Year awards
Some of the biggest names in entertainment, music and sport gathered at London's Claridge's Hotel on Thursday night for the annual Harper's Bazaar Women of the Year Awards. The star-studded ceremony, celebrating powerful and inspiring women, included Gillian Anderson, Chloe Kelly and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Singer Jade, who rose to fame as part of Little Mix before launching a solo career, was also among the winners and received the musician of the year award from Cheryl. Jade told the BBC it was a meaningful moment to accept the award from Cheryl, as she was "a major influence during my X Factor journey and throughout my time in Little Mix". "Both being from the north east, Cheryl was the first person I looked up to and thought if she can do it, so can I," she said. "I'd take pictures of her to the hair salon when I was younger and ask if I could look like her," she added. The evening also celebrated achievements in television and Erin Doherty took home the performance of the year award for her role in Netflix's hugely successful drama series Adolescence. Owen Cooper, the main character in the show, presented Doherty with her award and praising her for her "power and authenticity on the screen". Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa presented Aimee Lou Wood with her award for The White Lotus. He jokingly read the star's complete birth chart to the audience to show how "her fate to be this brilliant is written in the stars". Reese Witherspoon was honoured as cultural icon by Barbie's America Ferrera. In her speech, the American actress said she built her production company, Hello Sunshine, because "the system I existed in wasn't right for me, and I realised Hollywood wasn't telling the right stories". Theatre veteran Celia Imrie, presented the Theatre Award to Rosamund Pike for her acclaimed performance in the National Theatre's Inter Alia, and shocked guests when she joked about revealing who won Celebrity Traitors. Dudley Council's 30-minute fireworks display will be held alongside a funfair, market, music, food stalls and bars. TV star Craig Revel Horwood says he has a family connection to the famous spa town. Singer-songwriter Violet Skies has co-written six songs on Lily Allen's album, including Madeline. A new community-led arts and music festival has been granted a licence by the council. James Morrison will appear with the 200-strong community choir for a second time in November.
